“Hospital documents. Photographs. Letters.”
She looked at Dad.
“And this.”
She placed a photograph on the table beside the first one.
It showed Carl.
Older.
Gray at the temples.
Standing beside Emily.
The date printed at the bottom was only eight months earlier.
My heart stopped.
“Carl is alive?”
Emily nodded.
“He found me.”
“Where is he?”
Her eyes filled with fear.
“That’s why I came here.”
She handed me another envelope.
My name was written across it.
Again.
In Carl’s handwriting.
But this envelope was different.
Across the front, he had written:
SARAH — IF EMILY GIVES YOU THIS, DO NOT TRUST THE HOSPITAL RECORDS. DO NOT TRUST THE DNA REPORT. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, DO NOT LET LILY LEAVE THE HOUSE.
I looked at Lily.
“What does that mean?”
Emily’s face had gone pale.
“I don’t know.”
Then headlights swept across our living-room wall.
A car had stopped outside.
Dad moved toward the window.
Emily grabbed his arm.
“Don’t.”
The engine shut off.
A car door opened.
Then another.
Lily squeezed my hand.
Footsteps approached the porch.
Three slow knocks sounded against the front door.
Nobody breathed.
Then a man’s voice came from outside.
A voice I had not heard in thirteen years.
“Sarah.”
Every hair on my arms rose.
Carl.
I moved toward the door.
Emily caught my wrist.
“Wait.”
“But that’s your father.”
Her next words stopped me cold.
“No,” she whispered. “That’s the problem.”
I stared at her.
Emily pulled one final document from the envelope and unfolded it on the table.
It was a DNA report.
Two names were highlighted.
CARL CARTER.
LILY CARTER.
PATERNITY PROBABILITY: 0.00%.
I looked at Lily.
Then at Emily.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“I know,” Emily whispered.
Another knock came from the door.
Carl’s voice sounded again.
“Sarah, please open the door. We don’t have much time.”
I could barely breathe.
Then Emily pointed toward another highlighted result farther down the page.
I read it.
And suddenly understood why she was terrified.
The report did not say Carl was unrelated to both girls.
It said he was Emily’s biological father.
But not Lily’s.
I stared at the daughter I had raised for eighteen years.
If Lily wasn’t Carl’s biological daughter, and the hospital had switched an infant the night the twins were born, then somewhere there might be another eighteen-year-old girl carrying the other half of this secret.
But Emily shook her head.
“You still don’t understand.”
She turned the page.
There was a third name.
A name I had never seen before.
The relationship listed beside Lily was not “unrelated.”
It was:
BIOLOGICAL FATHER — 99.99%.
Outside, Carl knocked again.
And when I read the stranger’s name printed on Lily’s DNA report, my father made a choking sound behind me.
I turned.
Dad was staring at the page as if he had seen a ghost.
“You know him?” I whispered.
Dad slowly lifted his eyes to mine.
“Yes.”
His face had lost every trace of color.
“I know exactly who that man is.”
“Who?”
Dad looked toward the front door, where Carl was still waiting.
Then he said something that made thirteen years of lies suddenly seem like only the beginning.
“He’s the doctor who told you Emily was dead.”
